Parents need to know that Brothers in Arms 2: Global Front is a Second World War-themed shooter that plays much like traditional console shooters such as those in the Call of Duty series. It features a fair amount of blood (enemies spurt crimson with every hit) but no gore. There is also a small amount of mild profanity. Ubisoft has self-rated the game for ages 12 and over, but this seems low for a game that involves engaging in bloody combat in realistic settings inspired by an actual war. We believe its atmosphere and action are better suited for mid- to older teens and adults. Note that while it does support online play, it does not allow players to communicate with one another, eliminating information sharing risks often associated with multiplayer shooters.
QUALITY
Players familiar with World War 2-themed console shooters such as the Call of Duty games will immediately recognize the sort of play on offer BROTHERS IN ARMS 2: GLOBAL FRONT, a deep and polished first-person shooter for the iPad. It leads players through familiar theatres of combat around the world, with players pitted against both Nazis and the Japanese in bloody, realistic combat.
However, while the excellent graphics, sound effects, and voice acting help to create an authentic atmosphere, the awkward and often imprecise virtual controls will make it difficult for many players to find their footing. The skilled players we found online are proof that some players have overcome this hurdle, but judging by how few players we encountered in live games, we think those who are comfortable with these controls are the exception to the rule. It’s a good game for grownups, but the iPad may not be an ideal platform for it.
