I started to go away from Angry Birds around the time of Angry Birds Rio. I just felt that, while it was a great game, it started to become a little samey and I didn’t feel particularly inspired to continue playing it. But when I heard about the release of a new game, this time tied into one of my favourite film franchises – Star Wars – I was unable to resist. I even went for the HD one, it was Star Wars after all…
So, the purpose of the game hasn’t really changed- you catapult birds into structures in order to destroy all the pigs in each level. However, the title now features a blending with Star Wars characters and various powers from that universe. So, early on you see an Obi Wan Kenobi bird using the Force to take down buildings, a Luke bird has a fantastic lightsaber move and one that represents Han Solo firing lasers. The good news is that it’s as cool as it sounds.
The mini narrative that runs through the game- with the cut scenes, etc- follows the story of the original Star Wars movie (Episode IV). This first sees action on Tatooine and then on to the Death Star. You can also play both Path of the Jedi (with an in-app purchase of $1.99) and Bonus stages. A later stage; Hoth, where much of the action in Episode V takes place is to be made available soon. Each of the stages available have some 40 levels so plenty to be going on with. Like the other Angry Birds titles you have up to three stars to win on each level and the challenge is to collect as many as possible through efficient use of the birds you have.
The game blends the gravity-based gameplay of the earlier Angry Birds titles with that which you find in Angry Birds Space– where you need to harness gravitational pull of stars and planets to take down the piggies. This really mixes things up and makes each stage quite different. You also have to learn how to make the most of the new weapons included in the game. They add a whole new level of dynamics to utilize. Then there are super-weapons, such as air support from the Millenium Falcon no-less, plus the fact your characters upgrade as you progress and their weapons become more powerful. This creates a brilliantly fulfilling game that you can play over and over again and have totally different experiences each time.
Despite being disillusioned by the Angry Birds games, this has certainly reignited my interest. The game is familiar and easy to play, but terrifically difficult to master- especially now with a host of new powers to use. Angry Birds Star Wars is a far better game than I thought it might be and, although I was perturbed to see in-app purchases in a game I’d already paid for, I found myself blown away by the gameplay and cool Star Wars features. Whether you’re an Angry Birds junkie or just besotted with Star Wars, you’ll love this.
